ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a maker. I don’t set out to produce art about one subject or another and my art is not politically driven. I create for the pleasure of the task and because I can’t NOT make art. My mind is constantly filled with ideas, things I want to try, and artists I want to emulate. I love exploring new materials, I thrive on variations on a theme.

One of the reasons that I am invested in teaching is because of this opportunity to develop one idea and then watch a room full of people explore that theme on their own tangent. My art is a series of experiences evolving one after another, in the same way that classroom experience evolves. One idea leads to another.

I don’t create with selling art in mind, although sometimes my work is sold. What I do create is often very personal and intimate and far too connected to my soul to set a price. I give my work away.

I am a materials manipulator, a “toucher” of all things textured. My early art explorations were clay based, sometimes even functional pieces, that could be used and held, providing tactile experience. Then I began to explore the creation of ceramic textural qualities with other materials: paint, plaster, mixed media materials. I started to incorporate fabrics into my work, and have often gone on tangents that involve just cloth. I love to draw, to paint, and to sew.
