The focus of my concentration is A Mother’s Bond. I wanted to express my mother’s identity as an individual & the connection between her & her children through a visual representation of that bond. I show both of these ideas; of being a woman by telling her personal story & the love of a mother, my understanding of her feelings and struggles, through the lens of my memories. Each piece says something unique about my mother & her journey, especially her sacrifices.

Throughout my concentration, symbolism is used to communicate what's happening. I use setting, color, & objects to depict the moment each piece represents & movement through repetition & patterning (swirling dots). #1 depicts how I, the baby, was fated to be with my mother, the characters & background are black & white while only the umbilical cord is red representing the string of fate. I continue this with 2-4, using color and contrast to create emphasis in my story. As I grew older I understood the sacrifices my mother made for us: her body protecting us from the real world in 3, black & whites so we could remain in a realm of colorful innocence. I began to convey the deteriorating relationships within our family in 5-8 where the mood darkens to signify my mother’s dive into depression shown through color and subject matter. As the antagonist of our struggles, our father is represented in 6-8, but is obscured or cropped, as the top silhouette in the hourglass, gradually releasing money to us down below, as the hand pulling out her life as represented by plants & as the noose around my mother the queen, respectively. However, losing everything gave us an opportunity to start anew, and we supported each other & gave one another the confidence to move forward, making life more colorful as shown in 9-12.
