The projects in this section represent the first project offered to art students. This assignment requires them to learn about each of the Elements of Design so that they can illustrate their understanding, followed by a written explanation "in bubbles".

The projects in this next grouping were designed to highlight, or focus on the Principles of Design, and the Elements that make those Principles happen in a work of art. Students were directed to make an organized, repetitive, overall design that fills the space by using the letters of their first name. Then the space was divided into three sections in which the students were instructed to explore a particular Principle of Design- Balance, Repetition/Pattern, Movement, Proportion, Rhythm, Variety, Emphasis, and Unity,

Toward the end of the semester, Art I students work on a complex reduction block print that involves many layers of carving and printing incorporating printmaking skills (such as print registration) as well as design skills (such as color theory). Multiple successful prints of the same image demonstrates a significant control over the materials.
